Travel guide
A few days on the Atlantic coast, a visit to the imperial cities, or a journey south towards Merzouga: travelling by car gives you room to plan your own trip and stop along the way.
With NZN Car Rental, car rental in Casablanca comes without a security deposit. Pickup and return arrangements can be coordinated through WhatsApp. Mandatory 10% advance before delivery; 90% on delivery, cash or card.
Use these routes as starting points, then adjust them to the time you have and the places you want to explore.
The southern route: From Marrakech, cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass towards Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate. Continue to the Dadès gorges and Merzouga, allowing time between driving days to enjoy each stop.
Imperial cities and the desert: Combine Marrakech, Aït Ben Haddou and Merzouga before heading north through the Ziz valley and Midelt to Fès and Meknès. This longer route suits travellers who want to spend time in both historic cities and southern Morocco.
The Atlantic coast: Starting in Casablanca, head towards El Jadida, Oualidia, Essaouira and Agadir. If you want to extend the journey inland, include Taroudant and Marrakech before returning to Casablanca.
Check distances and driving times before setting your schedule. A mountain journey can take longer than the distance alone suggests.
Take extra care on mountain roads and in poor weather. Plan rural journeys during daylight where possible: limited lighting can make pedestrians, animals and other vehicles harder to see.
Follow posted speed limits and road signs, including those at roundabouts. In busy towns, leave yourself time to find your way and park without rushing. Keep your driving and rental documents accessible, and follow officers’ instructions at checkpoints.
Allow for fuel, motorway tolls and parking when planning your travel budget. Check current charges rather than relying on fixed estimates, and carry some dirhams for payments along the way.
Before a longer journey, identify fuel stops and avoid leaving refuelling until the last moment in remote areas. At the pump, clearly state which fuel your vehicle needs.
When parking, check that the space is authorised and confirm any charge before leaving the car. Keep your keys with you. For visits to a medina, look for suitable parking nearby and continue on foot.
Marrakech’s markets and Jemaa el-Fna, the historic medina of Fès, Chefchaouen’s blue streets, the Dadès and Todgha gorges, Merzouga and Essaouira each offer a different reason to stop. Choose a few that fit your route rather than trying to see everything in one trip.
